Norway’s IPF affiliate who is hosting the 34th Women’s and 43rd Men’s World Powerlifting Championships, posted a great interview with newly elected IPF President, Gaston Parage on their World Championship website. Gaston goes into great detail about the IPF’s push for the Olympics and the current status of Powerlifting at the international level.

Being realistic, when do you believe Powerlifters will take part in the Olympics?

A short answer on this not before 2020 (but we need not confuse the recognition with the Olympics). There are many other sports who are also seeking recognition by the IOC. We know Powerlifting is one of the most popular weightlifting activities worldwide. We also appreciate there will be a political element to our application. We must try and continue publicizing our sport and seek every opportunity to make sure we make friends and that each of our member countries has and seeks government approval whenever possible. I realize this will require the effort of many people over the coming years. Recognition is our first goal but that does not mean we can take part in the Olympics. This is a step by step process.
