Legal Squat Grips For Powerlifting Competitions

This video goes over what grips are allowed and now allowed in the squat for Powerlifting competitions. Specifically, I breakdown the rule for USA Powerlifting (USAPL) which is the same for the International Powerlifting Federation (IPF) and IPF-affiliates. If you compete in a different Powerlifting federation, then you should check their rulebook as the requirements could be different.

Every once in a while, this issue comes up on what’s a legal grip for the squat and what’s not. So, in this video, I breakdown what the rulebook says, what’s the clarification that USAPL added to their rulebook, and go over the most common grips used.

Hopefully, this helps lifters and coaches better understand what grip is allowed in competition. In addition, hopefully, it clears up the issue for some referees who are unsure or were taught an incorrect or old application of the rule. If you have any further questions about the rule, then you can always comment below or email me.

My name is Arian Khamesi and I’m a Powerlifting Coach under Squats & Science. In addition, I’m involved in the sport of Powerlifting as an athlete, meet director, referee, scoring manager, committee member, and more. On this channel, I produce videos that are beneficial for Powerlifting athletes, coaches, meet directors, and referees. The videos will be most applicable to those involved in an International Powerlifting Federation (IPF) affiliate, like USA Powerlifting (USAPL). But many of the tips and tricks can also be used for those involved in other Powerlifting federations.
