Eric Kupperstein

has been competing in powerlifting for many years, has won many national and world titles, and has set and holds many national and world records. He currently competes in the USAPL and prefers to lift raw. Here is a little bit about Power’s “One to Watch.”

Power: How old where you when you began powerlifting?
EK: I entered my first competition, which was a push/pull (bench press/deadlift), contest as a freshman in high school. I entered my first full powerlifting meet when I was a junior in high school.

Power: How did you get into the sport?
EK: The then-teenage National and American records were posted on the wall of the very first gym I ever attended – the Iron Gym in Brockton, Mass. It was shortly after the end of the football season in my junior year of high school and the weights I was lifting at the time exceeded those that were posted on the wall. I decided then to compete in powerlifting and have continued to do so ever since.

Power: Who are your inspirations?
EK: It is very difficult for me to make a list of individuals who have inspired me, as I am continuously awed by the human spirit — which comes in many forms, not necessarily powerlifting-related.

Power: What are your best lifts?
EK: My best raw competition lifts in the 60 kilogram weight class (132.25 lbs.) are as follows: squat: 197.5 kg (435 lbs.), bench press: 110 kg (242 lbs.), deadlift: 262.5 kg (578 lbs.), total: 567.5 kg (1251 lbs.).

Power: In what federations do you compete?
EK: To date I have only competed raw in the USAPL.

Power: Where do you train?
EK: I train at home and am fortunate to have great support from a select few individuals.

Power: Tell us a little about your training methods.
EK: My training methods are continuously changing and evolving. I guess the best way to describe my current training methodology is that of a customized/modified Sheiko program.

Power: What are some of your goals?
EK: The only specific current goal I have with regard to my raw lifting is to achieve the highest total ever recorded in the 60 kg weight class.

Power: Do you compete in any other sports?
EK: I do not currently compete in any other sports.

Power: What about nutrition? Do you follow any sort of plan?
EK: As a competitor in the lightest weight classes, my bodyweight needs to be monitored. As such, I tailor my eating habits based upon feedback I receive from the scale and how I feel physically. I do not count calories and/or follow any specific eating regimen. The only constant is my use of Con-Cret. It is one of the very few supplements that I take and I consider it to be a staple of my nutrition plan.

Power: Anything else you’d like to add?
EK: I would like to take this opportunity to do something I do not do enough: say thank you. Thank you to everyone who has helped and/or supported me in my endeavors. My wife, Lisa, and son, Joey, my parents, my training partners, my powerlifting family and all those people — some of whom know who you are and some may not — who have touched my life in a positive way. Thank you!
