What Is A Jury And What Do They Do?

This video goes over what a jury is in the sport of Powerlifting, who it consists of, what they do, and how a lifter or coach can go to them to protest a lift.

At local-level meets, you’ll almost never see a jury but they’re available at higher-level meets like Nationals and Worlds. The jury is made up of 3 or 5 referees and they watch over the platform to make sure all the technical rules are being properly followed. If there’s a 2 to 1 call by the platform referees that the jury deems is an obvious mistake, then they can overturn the call via a unanimous decision. A coach can go to the jury to protest their own lifter’s attempt or against another lifter’s attempt.

My name is Arian Khamesi and I’m a Powerlifting Coach under Squats & Science. In addition, I’m involved in the sport of Powerlifting as an athlete, meet director, referee, scoring manager, committee member, and more. On this channel, I produce videos that are beneficial for Powerlifting athletes, coaches, meet directors, and referees. The videos will be most applicable to those involved in an International Powerlifting Federation (IPF) affiliate, like USA Powerlifting (USAPL). But many of the tips and tricks can also be used for those involved in other Powerlifting federations.
