How To Set SMART Powerlifting Goals

This VIDEO goes over how you should be setting goals for yourself in the sport of Powerlifting. In the video, I go over what is S.M.A.R.T. goals. S.M.A.R.T. stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-based.

You want your goals to be Specific. You don’t want your goal to simple by, “I want to get healthy” or “I want to get stronger”. You want to be as specific as possible with your goal so you know exactly what you want to achieve and how to obtain it.

You also want your goals to be Measurable. This will allow you to actually know whether you achieved your goal or not. So, for example, you may want to base the goal on the specific numbers you hit in a competition since your 1 rep maxes are measurable.

You also want your goals to be Achievable. You don’t want to set your goals so high that you can’t achieve them even if you put 100% effort into achieving them. And you don’t want your goals set so low that you’ll achieve them without even trying. You want to find something that’s a bit difficult to achieve but still achievable with adequate effort.

You also want your goals to be Relevant. You don’t want to have a bunch of goals that are pulling you in different directions and taking away from each other. First, you want to figure out what is your #1 goal. Then, you want to create additional goals that go with that #1 goal.

And you want your goals to be Time-based. You don’t want your goals to have no end to them because then you’ll be more likely to put it off forever. You want an endpoint to the goal that you have to achieve it by.

In addition, if you want to be SMARTER, then you want to make sure you’re evaluating and reviewing. When you first set a goal, be sure to evaluate it to make sure it hits all the points mentioned above. And then once the endpoint of the goal arrives, be sure to review the goal to see if you achieved it or not, what went well, what didn’t go well, and how can you improve on your goals going forward.
