Are you looking for a Powerlifting coach and the first thing you plan on asking them is how much they charge? Did you have a bad experience with a past coach using this method of selection? Well, price in a vacuum means nothing! There are numerous questions you should be asking when selecting a coach, and many of them are more important than their price. 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐮𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐠𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐬!
Instead, ask what services are included in the package. Often, you aren’t comparing apples to apples because a package from 2 coaches may differ in amount of communication, amount of adjustments, whether it includes a competition day game plan, whether it includes competition day handling, and more.
Instead, ask what schooling and certifications they have. If the coach is new and doesn’t have a ton of experience, then you can gauge their base knowledge, willingness to continually learn, and their overall potential by what degrees and certs they have.
Instead, ask who they’ve coached and what they’ve achieved. If the coach has been around, then find out what groups they have experience with and what they’ve achieved in the sport.
Instead, ask what their current client load is and their max capacity. This can give you insight into how much time they can dedicate to you on a daily and/or weekly basis.
Instead, ask if you can get on a call to discuss your goals, hopes, and dreams! This gives you a chance to hear their voice, possibly put a face to the name, and get an idea of their personality. In addition, it can give you an idea of how much initial effort they’re willing to put into getting you as a client and what plan attack they have in mind for you specifically.
During this call, you can ask all kinds of additional questions to find out how close they live to you, if this is their full-time gig or a side hobby, if you’re likely to cross paths at meets, how knowledgeable they’re in the federation you compete in, if their competing can get in the way of coaching you, and more.
